i woke up to find one of my p's bit right in half dead, floating in my tank. i was very upset i feed my p's everyday and have no clue why they would attack my poor guy
The reason you found any left at all is because they are well fed, even in a large tank I expect to lose up to a third of a shoal on the way to adult hood, they squabble like grade schoolers but these grade schooler pack a mouth full of razors. I have found that several thick stands of elodea or cabomba plants will help by providing something to duck behind.
piranhas even tho they live together are not friends at all but more or less a non-aggression pact between the shoal.....even if u keep them well feed they could snap at ones false move and one injury in a pygo shoal leads to death 3 out of 4 times.....they sense weakness and take advantage of it just like in the wild
yea, i have had many problems with them nippling at each other when feeding, the bigger ones like to let the little ones attack and kill the food then they just come up and steal the food from them. im guessing when i fed them one of the bigger ones just snapped and let more poor guy have it
Sadly, we have about 10 or so in a 15 gallon tank . I check on them every so often to make sure everybody is "fine". I leave, and when i get back to check again about half an hour later, theres this pacu who's missing half of his body, and you can only see his head dangling on the top
suprise.... first sign a fish is weak is other fish are trying to eat it. gravid females if not stocked properly are slow enough the others will chase them and stress them out. You could imagine how it would benifit shoaling fish like that.... One gets a disease and is picked off before it potentially spreads it through the group.
thats why i'm getting out of the whole pygo keeping....its such a hassle with your fish always fighting and they could just randomly end up dead for no reason......i guess i'd rather have a happy collection of fish that swim together instead of at each other.....but i love my piranhas when kept solo
