i ice fish a particular lake alot and during the summer i catch bass and trout and sunnys all the time but in the winter i only catch trout. i dont like bass and dont want to catch them but i was curious why i never dragged one through the ice. as many trout i drag outta there i would think that eventually i would have picked up a bass. besides trout being cold water fish and bass not any other reasons you can think of?

thats exactly the thing about bass their not coldwater fish so they kinda go in to a hybernation type of mode. were its like a person while they are sleep walking. so they aren't very active. and trout on the other hand are active in the winter, same with pike.

fishguts, i assume you are in wi if you are by scubasteve.......i fished big cedar lake in washington county a couple times in feb. i saw a guy pull up 3 large mouths on medium to large shiners in a matter of a couple hrs. all looked to be between 16-18 inches long and very fat. another guy caught one the same size about 100 yds away. about 2.5 weeks ago i was jigging with a small hook and waxie and pulled up a 13 inch largie. it fell off at the hole. water depth was about 6-12 ft and among vegetation

What? While they don't feed as aggresivly in the winter as they do in the summer they don't hibernate. I catch them all the time on minnows all the time through the ice. What are you using as bait? Are you scoping the hole or fishing blind?
