My lents started showing signs of ich shortly after getting them:irked::cry: so raised the temp to 84 and added 1tablespoon of aquarium salt for each gal and using protozin 2x concentrate. As expected it got worse first and spread to the Urau in with them which are now recovering. The lents dont seem to be recovering though and one in particular looks like its on its last legs:cry:.Really struggling to see what else i can do .Any ideas appreciated as it looks like i've got a paticular resistant strain

I've found the cure to be worse than the disease some times. Turning the temp up, adding salt, and meds all at one time can stress out an already stressed out fish leaving it even more susceptible to ich. It's a catch 22, stressing out a fish with a problem that was caused by stress in the first place, but you have to do it because ich is a killer. The best thing you can do now is making sure they eat..... worms, mystis shrimp (live food sets them off the more movement the better) if their eating already keep feeding them what ever they are eating. Keeping the tank dark and avoid anything that would add further stress (reaching in the tank, tapping on the glass, sudden changes in water parameters ect). As long as ich is caught in time it rarely ever kills the fish. You can try upping the temp to 86-87 that may help.

Forget the meds, just use high temps and lots of salt, do a large water change (at least 50%), up temp to 88F and add several cups of salt. Cichlids are highly tolerate to salt, but ick is not.

Chers guys for the input.lost the worse effected one as it had lost all equilibrium and was just gasping laid on its side.So i have taken all the bogwood out done a 50% water cange and added 15 tablespoons of salt. The one i lost was by far the worse as it stopped feeding 2 days ago the other 2 up to now have still fed so fingers crossed.temp now at 88

When it comes to treating my prized fish I don't mess around. I'm not willing to add a bit of salt and up the temp to see if it makes things better. My philosphy is to hit it and hit it hard.

In addition to upping the temp I use Quick Cure. It is a combo of malachite green and formalin. It works very well. In fact I often add it to the tank even after water changes and when adding new fish. It's inexpensive and easy to use. In the U.S. Quick Cure can be purchased at Wal-Mart for $3. It is worth every penny!!

If the Quick Cure is not working I use Clout.

To add, I have found that South American cichlids are fairly tough and don't get ich easily but once they do, they get it with a vengence. They seem to be affected much worse once they contract the parasite.

In any case, stop messing around. Treat the disease and make your fish better.

I am with you Mark. Any signs of Ick I use quick cure. It is gone in a few days. I never see any stress from it and will always use it.

I've even used Quick Cure in a tank that contained olive snails and had no casualties. I did have a few crayfish (North American) turn blue and die about two weeks later. Not sure if it was the Quick Cure or just a coincidence. Oddly enough when I put a few olive snails (nerite) in my 180W they lasted about a day. I have no problems in my 55 or my 20L infact they flourish. I've checked water parameters and other than a PH difference 7.3 compared to 6.8 for the 180W they are relatively the same?

I'm not sure if taking out the wood will help. Depending on how long you wait to put it back in it may reinfect your tank. I don't know if ich can survive out of water.
Anyone know?

Wish we had quick cure over here.Lost another this morning whilst the uaru are making a full recovery.Bog wood was taken out so i could keep a better eye on how the fish are doing and wont be put back in for a while.
