I just got this little Pike Cichlid today. I didn't notice any white dots on him at the LFS, or maybe I missed them, but I'm noticing a few Ich-like dots on him. Does he actually have Ich? He seems to be doing fine though and has even nipped at some pellets and a cricket.

I raised the temp because I know Ich doesn't do very well in temps over 80 degrees, but what else can I do? I've had the luxury of never having to deal with Ich in the couple years that I've been involved in the aquarium hobby.

Yes, it is ich. Use table salt by a tablespoon per 5g and increase heat to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep treatment ongoing for 14 days. Keep us updated please.

Lupin is right salt and higher temps are the easiest and least likely to cause problems, unless
you have live plants in your tank, salt will most likely kill them. You could try some Quick Cure (available at walmart) if salt isn't an option.

Naw the plants are fake, so it isn't a big deal.

I feel like returning the fish and complaining to the LFS I got it from. Then again, I missed it so it's my fault, blah.

I have the temp at 83 but I'll up it to 86. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Ich is the most common paracite you will encounter in fish keeping. In my experience pike seem to be prone to it for some reason.

I guess I've been lucky because it's the first time I've ever had to deal with it.

He seems healthy though. I raised the temp to 86 and added some salt last night.

Today when I got out of work I checked on him and it looks almost completely gone. I'll add some more salt on Sunday probably, just in case.

Thanks guys.

Ick is the dreaded disease parasite.. always quarenteen new fish and avoid risking all your other fish... i hope he is doing better now...do not blame yourself for not noticing the ick... you cannot always see it ..when fish is under stress it comes out.. it takes a long time to eradicate but almost always it is successful...as long as caught right from the start of it.Do not be fooled that ICK is gone... you are doing a good job but ICK goes through the cycles so keep up the salt and heat routine.
