For the first time in years I have ich in one of my tanks. I'm just starting the heat/salt treatment but I'm concerned about my plants. Will the heat/salt treatment kill off all of my plants? Current plants are cryptocoryne wendtii, Java fern, Java moss, anubias, amazon swords, and some pothos.

It's possible, plants and sodium chloride (salt) don't get along well. It's always advised to have a quarantine tank set up just incase something like this happens, but don't worry I don't a QT set up myself lol. But I do have extra 5 gallon buckets on hand with a couple 100W midget heaters that I can use for outbreaks.

I always run my tanks at 80*F all year round to avoid Ich, and so far since I've started running them at 80*F I have yet to have any sort of outbreak, except for algae...

Thanks, this outbreak is from a pre-existing fish stressing out a new fish as far as I can tell. My tank is also kept at 80f but I guess that just wasn't enough.

Hmm. If you are worried about the plants, you could always isolate them from the fish for 2 weeks. Get a bucket with a light clipped on it or put it near some sunlight and stuff them in there.

Be aware that every time I transplant my crypts they seem to get transplant shocked and melt a bit. Dumb plants lol.

I have used a UV sterilizer in my planted tank to kill ich. Along with 84 temps and run UV 24hrs a day till everyone is clear.
Thanks, I went ahead and started with the salt and heat. I'll just replace the plants if I have to.

I was told that plants can carry ich also which was the only reason I didn't move them to another tank.

True. Any item that has been in a tank with ich can potential carry it to another tank. When the parasite drops off of the fish it will attach to any object it comes in contact with to complete its life cycle.

I used Ick med treatment in my planted tank more of a green than a blue with the temps at 80 I try to avoid the salt. Works for me haven't lost fish or plants. Comes in a large bottle enough to treat my 180g with 1 bottle if I remember correctly it's been a while since needing it.
