I came home from work today and noticed my oscar had developed some very small specs on his pectoral fin mostly on one side and a spec or 2 on the other, looks like ich. Probably got it from the new tiger barb.

I did a 40% water change, added aquarium salt, and cranked the heat up to 83-84, following the Ich thread on this forum...did have him at 78.

That sound right?

Sounds good to me. I'm no expert but I am just getting over an ich break out myself. I raised my temp to 85 and have been treating with ich attack. All my ich appears to be gone and I should be done treating in just a couple days.

Tinfoil Barb not tiger.... Tiger Oscar and Tinfoil Barb lol

Salt will kill ich at 3ppt (parts per thousand) lower than that is like giving an aspirin for cancer.
The water should taste salty, if you don't have a test kit. FYI, 35 ppt is seawater.
I use rock salt.
Neither salt nor heat works immediately though, it will take weeks, and just because the white spots disappear, doesn't mean the infestation is eradicated.

If it gets out of hand. I dont like medicating but api super ick cure at half dosage clears it up in less than a week usually. Good luck.

I put in the directed amount of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons.
