im battleing a ich break out in my 40 gal with my pbass. im treating with rid ich, raised the temp to 84-86. added salt. im running a ac500 and an air stone. what else can i do? fish dont look to good. some is gasping for air.

heat and salt.....then wait. I have been through it a dozen times in the last 12 yrs.

Make sure and increase aeration since the higher temps mean lower dissolved oxygen. You can stop with the Rid Ich, as the heat and salt work well on their own, and will stress the fish less than combining treatments.

yea forgot the temp is up to about 84-86.

how much salt to add? i read where it said 1tablespoon per gallon? and how often should i be adding?

yea just found that also. lol \

but doesnt say how often to add salt. i need to get a salt test tomrrow. would it be better to turn the heat a little higher? to about 89?

I'd stick with 84 or so. It's cured ich for me in the past.

What do you mean by "how often?" What I'm saying is it's just a set amount -- 2 teaspoons per gallon. You don't continue to add it. You just put it in, however much it is -- mine was a 75, so I put 150 teaspoons -- and that's it. Then the fish sits there in hot, salty water, and the ich die and then you wait another week after you see the last spots on the fish and then it's safe to do a big water change and remove most of the salt.

Like I said, I divided the amount of salt I needed to add by 3, and added a third of the amount each day. But you could, apparently from the sticky, just add it all at once, and then that's it. You don't add anymore. And you don't need a test, because you just add that set amount -- 2 teaspoons per gallon -- and then you stop and wait for the treatment to work.

ohh got it thanks. i thought i had to keep adding it. i didnt know it was just to add it once.

Yep, it's just a one-time thing, unless you do a water change -- then you'd need to add enough to replace what you take out. Don't forget to add aeration. Good luck in their recovery!

Mel, I'll try to edit that post you linked to add the basic steps. I should have redone this by now to make it much clearer.

Edit: I edited it now. Had to redo most of the article to clarify some changes. Let me know if anything else needs to be redone.
