A few days ago I notice that one of my two clown loaches (about 1.5") had tiny white spots all over. I then move it to my sump while I set up a quarantine tank. When I went to take it out, he was gone. I think he got over the divider an got suck into the pump and became fish food. My GT, two bleeding hearts and the other clown are all fine with no signs of ick, but I'm concerned of contamination. The clown had been in the tank for about a month. What is the best way to treat for ick? By the way, this was three days ago. Thanks.

if it was ich then putting it in sump wouldnt help because it was in same water, and ich is in the water not just the white cysts so sometimes you will always have ich in water and only when a certain fish gets stressed out will the ich be able to attach and create the cysts that we see, but anyways for your tank i would add salt (2tsp per gallon) and raise heat to 86 for a week and see if any of the other fish have gotten the cysts, if you still see cysts then just wait and keep salt in water and temp up until at least 3days after you see the last cyst but preferably for a week after last cyst is seen, just had to get rid of ich in my tank and this is how i did it, worked like a charm and no harsh medications to the tank :) GOOD LUCK

It doesnt matter if it has iodine actually. I recently treated a few clown loaches with iodized table salt with no problems at all. Lupin's thread about salt eased any worries or concerns i had about it.

You are probably right. But iodized salt costs more by like, pennies :D:D

I keep a bunch of the 26oz packs. One for ~100g...easy to remember :)

yeah i use the box of table salt that they sell, when i posted a similar question a couple weeks ago when i had ich, Lupin (im pretty sure it was Lupin but not 100% positive) said amount of iodine in table salt isnt enough to effect the fish as its only minuscule amount but to make sure the salt doesnt have "yellow prussiate" (spelling?) as he said it forms some kind of toxic compound when reacts with sun light in solution

Ich is usually symptomatic of poor water quality - either yours or were you bought the fish. Regular water changes are your best defense and cure for Ich. Raising the temp speeds up the metabolism of the ich shortening it's life span. The fluxuation of the waters salinity kills any free swimming ich baby's and stimulates slimcoat regeneration. Any heavy metals that are repeatedly used will biuld up in a tank and may eventually need removed - both API and Topfin make aquarium safe salts @ $2-3 a quart I'd say thats cheap- recommended dose 1 tablespoon per 5 gal. If you have soft/small scale fish like tetra's the dosage should be cut in half 1 tablespoon per 10 gal. However if no ich is present in the tank theres no reason to burn your fish with salt and especially not add heavy metals.

Apparently the idea of Quarantine wasn't one you thought of? If you had only had the clown loach a month it should still have been in QT.

Hopefully this will remind you of the importance of QT.
