elgin ill
I got my 180 up and running. I thought everything was fine and got all the fish I want in it. I just ordered 6 wild altifons (fry) about 2-3 inches and a few days after I got them, I started noticing white spots on them. I knew it was ICK but it's much easier for me to cure the ICK in a smaller tank but my tank is so big. But all the fish are eating and swimming fine but some scrap their body against the sand. The tank consists of 6 diamond tetris, 9 other tetris, 3 geophagus red head, 7 geophagus altifons, 6 rotkeil, and one royal pleco along with some plant. I see the ICK on 3 of the new altifons I just got in.

My question is what causes ICK and what's the best way to cure the fish in such a big tank (180). If anyone knows what's the best way to deal with it, I'll be open with anything.

From personal experience, I've noticed with a 5 degree water temp. drop my fish were plagued with Ick. To resolve I did 15% water changes every other day for a week and stabilized the water temperature. I am absolutely sure there are a number of other ways that Ick can occur but this is my only experience with Ick. Also bad water conditions i would imagine. I do know that research has been done that reveals that Ick cannot survive at a certain higher temperature.

Use salt and raise the temp. Add 3 tablespoons of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water, and raise the temp to 84-86. Many people will tell you to do water changes every day, and add salt to account for the water you removed. However, this is uneccessary if your water parameters are fine. Just do a water change 3 days after all signs of ich are gone.

no need to add salt. A water temp above 29 degrees C will kill ich within 10 days. Just make sure that you add extra aeration

if i ever see it i just up the temp to 31 32 ish and its all good but i havent seen ich in over a year
