Yes, but they rarely ever contract ick. Also, I always say try bumping the temp to around 86 and add salt before using meds.

+1 ich medicine is really only needed in the most severe cases of ich, most of the time all you have to do is bump up temp and do 2-3tsp salt per gallon (start with 1tsp per gallon on first day, then add 1tsp per gallon second day etc, iv only ever had to use 2tsp per gallon and left tank alone for two weeks and it went away) i didnt do wc during this time just because i didnt feel like having to add more salt and didnt want to fluctuate the temp (also i can get away with this since all my fish are still fairly small my nitrates dont get over 20ppm in 2 weeks), but if you do wc then just make sure to remember to replace the salt you take out.

+1 .. usually bumping up the temp will get rid of ich on it's own, with a little bit of work of course. Salt helps as well. You also need to remember to do a water change/sift through the gravel for ich that is not visble to the eye. Reasoning for raising temp it doesn't allow the ich to multiply. If you keep a constant temp of 86-87 it should be gone within 10 days, and of course if it isn't continue treatment.

UV sterilizers will help shorten the infestation too, by killing the parasite in it's free floating stage.
