First of all, I know this picture is bad. But after I bought one and put it my planted tank, it hides everytime i try to take a pic, so ill keep working on it. I think it is saxatilis, but not sure. Some questions I would like to know are:
1. What it is?
2. Max size?
3. Minimum size tank (in a 55g right now)?
4. Do they do well alone or with others?
5. I would like to buy a mate for it, so how do I determine sex?
Thanks!

1. its definitely a saxatilis group pike. possibly a sveni but the spangling has me thinking its not.
2. max size 8-10 inches probably
3. i think a 55 is big enough but id recommend at least a 75. the extra depth is good and makes it easier for them to turn around.
4. they probably wont do well with other pikes. it might be tough finding a mate and having them get along. its usually easier to do that when they are younger. you can always add some sa/ca cichlids but id stay away from the big ones especially if u only have 55 gallon tank. silver dollars are also a good addition and will help ur pike become more active. if there along in a tank they usually liek to hide alot.
5. sexing them... look for a white band on the dorsal fin or pinkish stomach which indicates female. i cant tell if the white on the dorsal fin is just light reflecting from above or not.

^ Its an obsession pretty much said what i was gonna say

id say sveni, which gets around 10", would do better in a bigger tank than 55g, but can probably make it in one. very aggressive do not mix with other fish, even of the same species sometimes

yeah, pretty much. Not all sax get a white band. Some get "eye spots" on their dorsal fins.

The very drab colour, relative lack of spangling and position and ocellation of the humeral spot makes me think it's Crenicichla proteus.

I've got a pike that was sold as gold flake pike that looks very similar. I'll try to get some pics up but i can tell you he eats like a pig and is a total beast.;) Right not i figure hes about 7" and is in a 75 with two orino pbass and a flagtail and he runs the tank. I was thinking of trying to get another pike to go in but i don't think thats going to happen. He has also grown just as fast as the bass but im sure he'll start to slow down soon. Great fish with personality though good luck.
