I got these 2 rocks today and this plant at the LFS. I know the rocks are some kinda slate rock. I just wanna know if they are added to my tank, will they mess with the water chemistry? Like maybe raise PH or hardness or anything? How should I clean them before adding them? Would rubbing them down in hot water be Ok? And the plant I need and ID on, but I want to clean it before just incase some ich or snail eggs or something hitched a ride on it. Whats a good, easy and safe way to clean this plant? Also, let me know whether this plant needs special lighting or if its a low light plant. I know, I should have found out before I bought it. Thanks

The plant is some type of crypt. Maybe a wendtii 'green'? Most crypts are low light and easy to care for once established. Some go through a "melt" when you first get them, but just keep removing any leaves that start to melt and it should recover.

The rocks I'm not so sure about. The don't really look like slate. Try scraping off some of the rock and mixing the power with vinegar or some other acid to see if it reacts. If it does, it is probably calcium carbonate based and will likely buffer your water to a higher pH. If not, it should be ok.

Ok, thats what I am gonna do. I did the test with the rocks and scratched off some particles of it and added vinegar, and it didnt fizz or anything. So it should be cool I guess. I dont know if they are slate rock, probably soemthing else. They are rough looking but they are smooth to the touch.

I am gonna use them to build a little shelter for my pleco.
