I picked up a couple additions to my tank. I bought what I'm certain is a trio of Melanochromis Joanjohnsonae. However the store told me that they were Labidochromis Textillus. I actually asked the worker there if they had any Mel. Joanjohnsonae, he proceded to point me in the direction of a tank marked labidochromis textilis and he told me that they are the same thing.

In my limited knowledge I have an understanding that these are oft confused and Textillus are monomorphic while Joanjohnsonae are dimorphic with the males being bluer and females being the blue/green/gold color.

Any idea what I have here?
The first pic is of what i believe is the male(bluer) and the rest are of what i believe are the females.

I wouldn't trust that LFS for any reliable source of africans

Joanjohnsonae, textilis from a very young age have distinct black stripes on pelvic and anal fins (similar to yellow labs). Joanjohnsonae juvies also have that yellow/orange on their anal fins.

If they're over 2.5" I would vent them to know for sure, sometimes subdominant males stay with the juvie/female coloration to remain low key.

yeah the smallest one is 3" so they're big enough to vent. I was going to vent them as i put them in the tank but I was in a hurry so it didn't get done.

and just an FYI for those of you that purchase from livefishdirect, these fish are from their brick and mortar store. They have them listed as Joanjohnsonae on the website but they were listed as textilis in the store. So they got it right on the web at least.
