I work at an LFS, and we got a fish in labeled by the distributor as an "oboe pike," but I can't find any references to any such fish. He's currently about a foot long and growing like crazy.

So, I figured I'd come ask the monster fish keepers if anyone knows what he is. Here are a couple photos:

It's probably because you're looking for ODOE Pike. Also known at African Pike. It's scientific name is Hepsetus Odoe. They can grow up to 24" and grow pretty fast. I hear they can be hard to get off live. Otherwise, I don't know much about them...never kept one.

yep afican odoe pike

That's him! Oboe, odoe - amazing what a difference one letter can make!

He's a pretty amazing fish... I'd get him if I could afford a large enough tank. Monster fish keeper, I am not. At least for now. ;)

Thanks, guys!

Ohh very nice I have the same fish. I had mine about a month now and he has grown like an inch, and loves to eat ! ! ! Very cool though.

I wish it was an GATF haha reminds me of a small verson though.

They are great fish. I have one who has had a very quick growth rate. I bought him at about 5", and the day I got him home he was eating frozen shrimp. Mine is not as skittish as many similary shaped Characins. I had a Yellow Tail Barracuda who was way more skittish and way less active.

Yeah, this guy is not skittish at all. When I was photographing him for this post, it was hard to get a full body shot because he kept swimming up to the camera and sticking his face in it. He's got a lot of personality.

And he's definitely grown 6 inches in the last three or four months - incredible!
