florida gar..zhi peng you should be getting better at this...!!

I just wish to confirm its identity base on the opinions from you guys before finally concluding that it's a florida, which is my initial speculation. Up till now, I merely have difficulties in ID-ing the crocodile and spotted (from florida) only.

Seems to be a big florida.

at a larger size, florida gars heads can be pretty wide in comparison to when the juveniles...however, they will have a completely different head shape and size compared to a gator gar. it's probably pretty easy to mis id it from a video, but there are other tell tale signs on the fish that prove it's a florida gar...anyone want to see if they can tell what it is?

ps: sol, when're u posting the next gar id up? can't wait!

Florida gar for sure...i am yet to see any fish on the South/Southeast Asian sites that i would positively ID as true spotted gars.

another thing to note is that gars in captivity will tend to have shorter snouts than their wild counterparts in many cases. they also tend to have smaller teeth...i think i mentioned to the OP (via the gar quiz thread) to check out "phenotypic plasticity"...anyone else curious should look into it too.

if you think about it logically, it makes sense...if you are being fed all the time and don't truly need to hunt down your food (even dropping a bunch of feeders into a gar tank doesn't compared to truly hunting down food in the wild), you don't need to put resources toward larger teeth, longer jaws, etc etc as the fish develops. this is why we see wild gars with much larger teeth than captive gars of similar age or size.

new gar quiz will be posted soon...hopefully later today--
