Very nice fish!

Anyways, they only eat live fish and are very shy at first. Add a bunch of rosy red minnows, small goldfish or even feeder guppies to the tank at once. The cudas will likely eat until they cannot any more quickly, and there should be left over feeders swimming around the tank. During the night he will eat them.

Also, your redtail payara isn't looking thin or fat ATM. Give him some time and he will be comfortable and eating a lot.

Hydrolycus Scomberoides is short lived and only lives a couple of years in aquariums.

H. Armatus can live many years, but I heard of them suffering fatal injuries quite often before that point.

From what I have heard, H. Tatauaia is one of the most aquarium friendly vampire tetras. It lives long (not too sure, but definitely at LEAST a few years), isn't quite as claustrophobic, isn't too skittish and seems to be king of the tank once it feels comfortable and settles in.

How long have you had your redtail tat? In my experience they can take up to a few weeks before they feel comfortable enough to go after food.I have only had one(out of five) that took down an apollo shark almost as soon as it was placed in the tank...I was eventually able to ween all of my tats off of live food and onto shrimp and fish fillet and even freeze dried krill.

i got get last week...yesterday i see my Redtail ghost shrimp! Really cool...

These guys can take a month or two to even feel comfortable...
He'll eat when he chooses to, as long as he's healthy.
They can take dead food by the way...

Wow that's new info for me..Mine not eating dead food...

Mine took dead food pretty early on, but it isn't always the case. Some can take weeks or even months to take dead food and I am sure a few never do.
