Can anyone help with an ID? LFS just called it wild cichlid. Looks like it may start getting some color but not much so far. Fish is only 2 inches long right now. He does not sit well for pics.

Xilouense, Red isletas, red devil, or mixed of other Amphs....

If your lfs is stupid. then one can only guess. There is a clan of slightly different Amphs they all look slightly the same

I also agree it appears to be one of the Amphilophus sp.
I believe the barred types are often referred to as "wild" type (though not necessarily really wild) as compared to the standard pink tank raised and hybrid midevils.
Whether the one in your pic is any more wild than another is anybodies guess.
Here is an Amphilophus sp amarillo to compare.(there are many similarly barred types, different species from different lakes in Nicaragua)

an Astatheros (once considered in the genus Amphilophus) rostratum

It's most likely a juvenile red devil. I work at a pet store and almost all of our Red Devils come in that size and color, only to fade in a week or two. Started happening a few months back that they started coming in un-faded

Looks like it can be any amphilophus or mix, just because it looks "red devil" that doesn't really mean much....
