The head shape of this lungfish is much broader than the small annectens I have here:

Both of them are at about 4".

The shape gives it the appearance of a Protopterus amphibius. However, the mottling in the caudal area leads me to think this is a young Protopterus aethiopicus. (I have P. amphibius and it has never had any dark color or mottling).

It could be one of the african sub-species of either Protopterus aethiopicus aethiopicus, Protopterus aethiopicus congicus or Protopterus aethiopicus mesmaekersi

Hmm... Can you elaborate more and list out the difference between the few sub-species?

I have never known about any sub-species.

Thank you.
