i just picked up a really neat catfish, i think it is a young H. wyckii however the wiskers are white rather than solid black like many of the pictures i've seen. also how long will it take the wiskers to grow back, or do they never grow back? he's missing most of one on the right hand side. i picked him up for 4.99 in a tank full of Synodontis angelicus(there were about a dozen on the bottom and they weren't labelled so the employee said they were synos)

post a picture so we all can see it.

if the whiskers are white, and it looks like a bagrid then it has to be Asian Red tail catfish (H. wyckioides)

yep, its an asian red tail, so was 4.99 for a 3" a good price? could i keep a pair of them together now and eventually in a 180g? right now it's in a 20L with (4) 2 1/2" ID sharks and (3) 1" darters. i'd imagine i'll have to move the darters out soon if i want then to live, or should i move him into a 10g with lots of ground cover until he gets a bit bigger and i upgrade him.

yeah thats a good price. Ive seen 3" for 10 here. As for the tank mates. This is definately a species only type fish. They tend to be very reclusive and extremely territorial. They get quite large. Upwards of 3 feet.

Watch out for the tank mates ive heard they dont hit their nasty streak till they get a little bigger. But it will definately hit before the 10" mark. Good luck

yea, i was expecting a pretty aggressive cat when i bought it, like i said i thought it was a crystal eye cat, but ART sounds cool too, although larger. i'm aware of their large size, i was thinking i might sell it around the 8~10" mark, he's already taken over the cave in the tank(which is kinda cool because now i can see my ID sharks again) when can i expect to see him start eating and becoming active?

well, i just got him to take a small piece of krill, i poked it into the cave and saw some white wiskers and it disappeared.

well im glad to hear that you have gotten him to eat. I dont think youll have any problems. Unfortunately i doubt you will see him eat very much. I was reading a post another member had put up about his ARTC. He said that he puts in a couple pieces of shrimp before he turns out the light. Then after the lights go out the shrimp all disappears pretty quickly.

I've heard of people hand feeding them, but it hasn't happened with mine. I do get to watch mine eat now that he is bigger, but he didn't get real brave until he was about 10". I would be careful with bite sized tank mates, but no big worries with things bigger than him until he reaches the 8-10" mark, that's usually when something snaps in their head and they eat or flat out kill anything that is within reach. Fun fish tho.

def not gona live in a 180 for long
