Okay just got this little guy from our LFS and he was in a tank simply labeled mixed cichlids. I'm wondering if he's a bifasciatus? or something similar. He's still very small only about two inches but has a very nasty personality already and is getting great joy in biting all of my silver dollars already so I know he's going to be a jerk but would love to know the species and how big he's going to get, etc. Hope these pics are good enough for you guys to tell. Hard to see from the pics but his tail and top fin definately have red on them as does the area around his gills.

looks like a small vieja synspillum.

yes vieja

Thanks for the replies so far. Whatever this little guy may be he's loaded with personality, seems like he's going to be very aggressive so he may end up having to get his own tank. He's currently housed with silver dollars, three tinfoil barbs, and a pair of Sajica's along with a synodontis decorus.

Thank you I thought so too :) This guy is definately going to need his own tank, the pair of Sajica's even though they are much larger then he is has already gotten torn fins and I keep seeing scales from the tinfoils floating in the water so he's definately a nippy mean little guy. We are most likely going to move him into a 29 by himself until he gets a bit bigger and then he will most likely end up with a large tank by himself if he keeps this same personality. So much for only having three tanks in the house lol, we were up to 13 tanks at one time, why do I think we may end up like that again after reading about all of these fish species on this forum lol Either way I already love him even though he's a brat lol.

I just ordered 3 Bifasciatums and received them Friday. My 3 look very similar to that. I have several Vieja's and Paratheraps, and your pic looks most similar to my Bifasciatus. It looks nothing like my Synspilus (red head).
