Ok ive kept and bred fish on a small scale for several years. I have only ever had small tanks, 25 gals, 30's and 55's and all have either had internal power filters like fluval 4's and the odd undergravel filters ( which i dont use anymore as i have more sense and experience now. So i have never needed or owned a sump filter. My knowledge on this subject is very very limited. Last week i purchased a huge tank (huge to me, as its the biggest ive ever owned) its a juwel rio 400 uk ltr, 87 uk gal this works out at about 107 us gallons. the tank has a huge built 'box' filter containing all the filter mediums and powerhead. I must mention, this new tank is going to be my primary breeding tank for my most prized fish to breed in so good filtration is a must. So my question is do i need or could i benefit from a sump filter? How exactly do these things work and what are the benefits?, and finally how do i set one up? can ya buy these things ready to go or do i need to buy all the parts, filter mediums and so on? Any help or advice is most welcome, thanks for your time.
