I'd like to report incidence of spousal abuse

No, not my neighbor . My two convicts just had a brood. The female sat watch until the eggs hatched. Then a day after they hatched the male took over and basically started abusing the female. She's so beat up she's got torn fins which lead to a big patch of fungus. So I had to take her out and put her in a QT with Pimafix.

I though convicts were supposed to be good parent(s) plural? Did I get an abusive father or are they just that way?

You have a very protective father. Not too unusual. In the wild, those fry would be VERY safe. Unless he snaps and eats them, of course...

the male most likely didn't think she was doing a good enough job, its not that uncommon for this kinda thing to happen, both ways, for example... when my monos spawned the first and second time my female gave the male the boot, the third time they both were there. she will get better after a few more broods then i bet they will get along much better after spawning

Come to think of it this is the second brood. The first one was mainly guarded by the female and the babies got picked off by another convict. So that means the dad remembered the first time and said "this time I'm going to watch them"? That's pretty intelligent for a 'stupid' fish.....
