I got this cichlid as a Midas from the well known and respectable Jeff Rapps..... It was labeled as his tank bred chunky Midas. After owning it for a few months I started questioning if its a true Midas, I've had one before in the past and the mouth was not pointy as this one and the body was much taller at this size. The fish is currently 5", I feel like it can be a mix with a red devil or a full bred RD. here are some pics and you tell me what you think it is..... Thank you

If it is A. Citrinellus, they kind if grow in to the stockier fish you're used to seeing. As it grows the snout will look shorter and shorter.

If its coming from Rapps chances are its a true Midas probably not the wild ones but most likely in the low f#. You could always ask Jeff himself I'm sure he would tell you

It's not a devil. When looking at the structure of the mouth to look for rounded lips or pointed lips you'll see the difference for sure. There is no mistaking that triangle look that Labiatum have for mouths. Secondly, if it is from Rapps and was sold as a Midas you can pretty well bet you got what you paid for.

It is a midas. Midas go through this awkward teenage phase where they look crappy between 4-7" after the 1-2year mark then they start filling in and becoming thicker stockier and get there hump nice.

Can you sex my Midas? Male or female?

I started a similar thread this morning as well. Try to get a good look at the vent. Thin and pointed usually indicates male, short and blunt/rounded usually indicates female. If you can't see anything, you can either remove the fish to see the vent manually or increase the water column temp to 80F+ until it shows (this has always worked for my CA's).
