I catch these fish in creeks and streams all over the place here in central North Carolina. They are not the common creek chub or fathead minnow. When I catch them in a minnow trap the have vertical stripes in the midsection of the fish along with rainbow like colors on the tail. After putting them in an aquarium the stripes disappear and then they get a florescent gold sometimes green/blue stripes that run the length of the fish.

At first I believed they are shiners from the Luxilus genus, I am not very knowledgeable about the shiners in your area but after looking at pictures of Common, Warpaint and Crescent shiners I don't believe my 1st guess was correct..... sorry; I would post these pics on the NANFA forum where there are several resident experts who would be able to help you in the identification.

I catch them too in creeks in the Raleigh area. Definitely a shiner. I'd think war paint or maybe emerald.

You know it could be a warpaint....we don't have them around here and I don't know how accurate the pictures on google were, I do know that if it is in the luxilus genus most of them are good looking and hardy pets, I used to have some crescent shiners until my Green sunnie got big enough to kill them.
