Hey everyone. I recieved 4 red head tapajos in a trade about 2 months ago. In the 2 bottom pictures is one of them. 3 are small and one is about half an inch bigger then the others. The pic is of one of the small ones. The top pics are of 2 of 6 that I purchased yesterday to bring my total of red head tapajos to 10. But not that I see the ones that I got yesterday and the ones ive had for 2 months. The ones Ive had dont look like tapajos. The bigger of the 4 has red on his head but they just dont match the other 6 that I got yesterday which more colorful and are about a half inch smaller then all 4 that Ive had. Are the 4 ive had (bottom 2 pics) geophagus redhead tapajos? Please help!

With geo red heads, color coming in can be dependent on several things. Size is the first. I got a batch of geo red heads from Jeff Rapps when they were 1.5" long each about 2 months ago. They all came in at the same size. I now have one at 3.5", another at 3" and two at 2".

I believe gender has a bit to do with growth rate as well. I believe males grow faster. And generally speaking, red heads are a slow growing species.

Generation also seems to play a part. Wild caught red heads seem to get their color a little later than the line bred strains.

It is possible they aren't geo red heads, but you could be waiting a while to find out for sure since most geos are very difficult to identify at young sizes. Someone with more experience IDing geos can chime in and they might be able to tell you for sure, but to me, your geos look just like mine did (and the two smaller ones still do) when they first arrived at my door.

Another reason that leads me to believe that they may not be geophagus red heads is they have no black dot in the middle of their body like the 6 I purchased yesterday. I was told all red heada have it at this size. Anyone else want to chime in and help me out? Lol

That may be the case, although on my red heads the black dot comes and goes.

Red heads will eventually develop the characteristic blue and orange horizontal stripes in the tail. It appears that a few of the fish in your first post show it but the pictures are small and poor quality, so it's hard to say. At least two of them do look like red heads, though.

Sometimes spot will not always appear, IMO they look like redhead tapajos especially looking at the tail and eyes :)
