i popped into my local fish store today to see if they had any green terrors or any nice looking JD's. After having a look there were loads of JD's but in the JD tank i noticed an odd looking cichlid in there that seemed to be holding its own against the JD's too the point were the JD's were actually avoiding the mystery cichlid.

i decided to rescue the poor fish before it became JD's dinner or died of stress but i have no clue what it is although for £1.95 i thought it may be and interesting mystery.....

heres some pics but due to transport stress its difficult to see the large wide vertical banding.

so what do we think it is ? (some sort of jewle cichlid cross)

Looks like a stressed out Anomalochromis thomasi ... aka dwarf jewel cichlid (also sometimes african dwarf ram).

I did think along those lines but its two long at 2 inch for a juvenile

I don't think it's a juvenile. I think it's an adult Anomalochromis thomasi. The only thing missing seems to be the black earspot on the back of the gill, but I guess it could just be washed out. I can kind of make out the white-and-red edged dorsal, though, and the spots are right.

That's for the I'd guys. Had a look this morning now that he has coloured up nicely text book dwarf jewel cichlid. Best move this guy to the smaller tank.
