I bought one like that from petsmart. after a few weeks it lost its yellow turned like a grey brown and was super aggressive beating on fish 3x its size. Never got a positive ID lots of guesses though everything from red devil to Lyonsi.

That was my guess, but I am always keeping an eye out for gems, so I thought I'd get some other opinions. All their "Jack Dempseys" were also the same as this fish. There was a super cute red devil I was tempted to get as well, but since I don't actually have my giant tank yet, I don't trust a devil in one of my smaller grow out tanks. They normally at aggressive even when quite small, right?

I don't know if you can really see it in the pic, but the little RD already had the beginnings of a nuchal hump. Think it be worth getting him, or would he murder all my other fish between now and spring?

What else do you have in the tank and you can try just be prepared to move it if things turn ugly

Well the little RD is about 2.5 inches. I have several growout tanks currently that are 75 and 90g tanks that he could potentially live in. When I get my 500g up a lot of the fish will be moved to that. The tank that I would likely put him in has a couple 7-8in Syns, a 7in Severum, some Oscars and GTs in the 3-4in range, a 4in Carpintus, a 3in Paratilapia, and a few 2-3 inch Thoricthys and Cryptoheros sp. He would be one of the smallest fish in the tank... Think I should risk it and pick him up? Do you think he is a nice RD/Midevil specimen?
