I want a positive ID on this please. Also, he seems to show white on his scales due to stress. Look at the gills..... they look like theyre developing dark spots. could this be from ammonia? The tank they are in now has ammonia readings of .25 and PH of 8.0 . I got him off craigslist with my tank and i don't think the fish were well cared for. Thanks in advance

This fish looks like a female saulosi(Pseudotropheus saulosi). As of the gills they look fine to me but I would wait for someone more experiensed to post.

its not a salousi, its a lab of some discription.
.25 ammonia at ph 8 is 100 times more toxic than .25 ammonia at ph 7, so you to rectify this asap.
the gills are showing ammonia burns, i think you will be lucky to keep the fish alive much more than a few months.
ammonia burns in the gill can be fatal 3 - 4 months AFTER the original ammonia incident.
Any ammonia or nitrite is fatal at ph 8

I disagree, low ammonia isnt going to kill him down the road, cichlids are very hearty and he will do fine. If he is breating normal he is OK. Looks like your water is a little cloudy, probably not fishished with your cycle. I would do a 25% water change every few days and use prime or amquel to keep the ammonia nitrites safe.

thanks for the post and all, but I GOT HIM LIKE THIS. Don't try to pin the blame on me if he came from someone that doesn't know how to care for fish and doesn't care to learn. I got the tank as a complete deal WITH THE FISH. I did my best (kept the same filter media/substrate/rocks) to keep the BB to prevent the tank from "cycling" and i have a big bottle of prime that i have treated the tank with a couple times in the last week. i only got the tank last monday. so all things considered, .25 doesn't seem bad. thanks for your time

Metriaclima Estherae (akas Red Zebra). Take some more pictures, I don't see anything wrong with it.
