I just got this guy from the LFS and she did not know exactly what it was called. I think it maybe a Geo as it sifts through the sand for food.

nope it a gymnogeophagus rhabdotus.

I just read they need a cool down period for three months out of the year, other than that I cannot find anything about sizes and things.

When I search the name some of the pictures dont look like the fish I have. Do they change color at a certain age or something?

looks like a gymno to me. its hard to know the exact species w/o knowing the collection point. they do need a cool down period, i'd recommend just keeping them without a heater. as for size, they max around 5-6". its best to keep in smaller groups or pairs. just like geos they need/like sand. in my experiences they are a little fiestier than geos.
