its a bit hard to tell but may be some common button polyps, or even just a sponge.

How old is the LR do you think??

local fish store for months and in my tank from the start of the cycle!(3 months now) These things were on there in the first week in the same spot but then dissapeared for two and a half months (till a week or two ago) If you look real close( my camera doesn't want to focus in that close) they are individual little stalks like polyps and little hairs on ends !

If it disappeared and came back its probably a sponge of some sort since they can undergo sporogony. They can also reproduce asexually by creating gemmules. What happens is when conditions get tough and its hard for the sponge to survive it creates gemmules which look like the picture I attached. Gemmules and spores can survive very very harsh conditions and stay viable for a very long time. When conditions get better they start to develope into a new sponge. So my guess as to what could have happened is that when your tank was cycling or some other condition the sponge had a hard time in the uncycled/other conditioned environment created lots of little spores and gemmules. Now that the tank is cycled or some other change the gemmules and spores have started to develop new sponges again.

The little stalks you said were there means its probably some type of colonial sponge. The little tentacles probably are not tentacles but part of the osculum.

Oh BTW for those interested the little pointy looking things on the left of the gemmule are spicules. They give the sponge a more rigid structure and are held together by spongin but you can't see any spongin in this picture.

If you want you can send me a sample and I can check it out under a dissecting scope or compound light microscope and tell you what it is. With those pictures it could be a whole lot of things. PM me if you want to send some.

Looks like it's living coral from what ever dead coral it is on right now. Im guessing alvepora.

either that or gonipora.. it's definately live coral fomr the peice of rock

Mmm yea, I gotta agree, look at the skeleton and regeneration pattern of the tissue. I'm thinkin its a coral and not a sponge. Some good micro shots would be really helpful.
