i got this guy for free. Amazing colours and markings on him. Does anyone know what he is though? im thinking he might be CA/SA cichlid but i dont know...

That's a Salvini and a female I believe. It's a Central American cichlid.

how can you tell if its a female?

You can tell its a female by finding the dark patch in the middle of the dorsal fin. Beautiful female you have there!! My little female is just starting to color up, she's covered in blue spangles.

the spot on the dorsal fin doesn't mean it's a female. it looks like a male to me, females have a lot more red on the underside.

females usually have the black spot on their dorsal fin and the black spot on their gill plate. nice salvini how big is she?
