Can you please tell us how you come to that conclusion. I have a Spotted Gar, or at least that's what I've thought for the last 4-5 years. He looks just like the fish in that pic. Nevermind, I'm just going to post some pics right now.
Could you please tell me what you think of my Gar. I've had 2 other people agree that he's a spotted gar however I think you know a little more than they do.

It's actually from a petshop and I was told they were Alligator Gar's. I have one question though, I have 2 Florida Gars, and how come mines have spots on top? Also, this would be a shame if my tank was this dirty.

Here are my Gar's... Can someone please tell me why dont they look like the picture from the first post?

I think I got a Spotted Gar and mine has the big spot patern on the whole lenght of the body and snout! Very clear markings, seem different then yours, Gar Keeper.
Still got to check Solomon's Gar ID key, heard there may be new info on difference between Spotted and Florida.
Doesn't matter really, they both will fit in my tank for the next few years!
Ceewah, it looks like a different gar then the first pics,Strange!
Could you try posting some more (clear) pics?
Cheers!

THERE ARE MANY PATTERNS!!!!
look we have been over this many many times. Unless your gar is wild collected then there is a large chance that it is a florida! plain and simple guys. floridas change quite a bit with surrounding area. this is one reason for different patterns. the other reason is THERE ARE DIFFERNT PATTERNS!!!
gar keeper, your does have some interesting caracteristics but im geussing not a florida. what is his size and got any better pics of head?

all the gars pictured in this thread are Florida gars. i haven't had much time on the forums lately because we are starting up our field season; that and the information will be moving to publication in the near future, so we won't be posting all the details.

in short, as LP said, patterns are HIGHLY variable in gars, so that's not always a good diagnostic. FL gars are of course highly variable in pattern specifically. generally speaking, a spotted gar will have a longer narrower snout than FL gars. couple this with the LFS issue that just about all of them are FL gars. look carefully at the photos i've posted over time (as well as richard) of spotted gars. pattern is somewhat different, but if you ignore that you will start to see some morphological differences in the head/snout. at early juvenile stages ID is tougher, but at most of the larger juvenile stages (like what we see in LFS), the ID for FL gars is pretty solid--
