all the gars pictured in this thread are Florida gars. i haven't had much time on the forums lately because we are starting up our field season; that and the information will be moving to publication in the near future, so we won't be posting all the details.
in short, as LP said, patterns are HIGHLY variable in gars, so that's not always a good diagnostic. FL gars are of course highly variable in pattern specifically. generally speaking, a spotted gar will have a longer narrower snout than FL gars. couple this with the LFS issue that just about all of them are FL gars. look carefully at the photos i've posted over time (as well as richard) of spotted gars. pattern is somewhat different, but if you ignore that you will start to see some morphological differences in the head/snout. at early juvenile stages ID is tougher, but at most of the larger juvenile stages (like what we see in LFS), the ID for FL gars is pretty solid--
