I'm pretty sure it's a rohm but what kind is it?

Long story short...my friend wants 2 give him to me for free:grinno: because he's kinda downsizing on the hobby right now and he knows that he will be well taken care of. I really want him but there's only 2 things holding me back from saying yes!

1) The place that I'm renting out right now will only allow small tanks (30g and under) but I'm trying to get them 2 bend the rules a little for at least a 55g (he's around 10 inches already).TRUST ME...if I had my way, he would be in a much bigger tank. I have a 180g back at home but thats a no go cuz it's filled with rbp's. U guys think he'll be alright in a 55g 4 life solo?

2) The place im renting out right now gets REALLY damm hot during the days when I lock up and leave 4 work. Im just worried that he's gonna boil in the tank by the time I get back in the evening. I thought about putting the a/c on at decent temp but I can already see my girl throwing a big fit about me wasteing electricity for a fish. If u guys can think of any cheap solutions on keeping the tank cool for at least 8 hours in the day, please let me know (Cracking the window open a little is not a safe solution)...I really wanna take him!

I'm not sure about ID or tank size requirements for these fish but you can drop a bottle ( or two) of frozen water in the tank to lower temps during the time you are at work.

Sorry not more of a help for ya.

that looks like a Ternetzi, if you can get it for free I would say go for it. if you are around NJ then you can give it to me if you can't house it :D
55g is to narrow for such large fish, get like a 50 breeder or a 75g if you can, something 18" wide instead of 12". with a 75g you can probably house that beast for life.
how big are your reds? Ternetzi is a pygo too (color morph of natts. == aka rbps) so if they are about the same size you can put them together in the 180g. you would love this guy :)
as long as the water temperature doesn't get too hot would be fine. sometimes my tank would get up to like 84F when it's really hot and I didn't have my AC on, fish does fine.
you can probably set the AC to keep the house at around 78-80deg when you are not home then when you are home, cool it down to whatever temperature you feel comfortable.

Pygocentrus nattereri +1

I used to have the temperature problem at an apartment i had too. What i did was got 3 or 4 2 qt. (half gallon) tuperwares and filled em with water and froze em. Id drop one in the tank before i went to work, at night take it out and purt it back in the freezer.

that actually is a good idea, but just make sure you don't over do it to cause the water temp. to drop too much

how hot do your place get anyway, maybe open the window a little (if neighborhood is safe) and keep the ceiling fan on if you have one.

Yeah much of the amazon is near the equator where the average annual air temperature is 79F, but in the dry season it easily gets 100F. They'll probably be okay, especially for a couple hours each day. Water loses/gains heat more slowly than air.

the amazon is located mostly in the giant red blot on this climate map from NASA:

or you could get a chiller:

but if your lady would trip about leaving on the air, then she's mos def gonna trip when you buy a thousand dollar chiller for the fish tank.
