i think it may be some type of port cichlid, but would love an id.. bad pic but he's skiddish, just got him in a tank, will try to get a better one tomorrow, rescue fish was free and was gonna be flushed by the guy down the street because renters left him in a rubbermaid container with 3 dead fish, and my last rescue for a while.

Yup, appears to be one of the port cichlids ... southern clade I would guess. Would need better pics, but given the color in the pic I'd lean towards Cichlasoma dimerus. That is subject to change with better pics though. *lol*
 
Cichlasoma dimerus was what i was thinking also, now i'm pretty much 100% sure, i'll still post another pic whenever he decides to come back out, lol.
 
Plus black ports, Cichlasoma bimaculatum, have alot less reflective scales along their body compared to the southern species.
 
Sadly port cichlids are one of the hardest genus to ID, the buggers. *l*

BGCoop8784 - If you can count the number of hard rays in the anal fin, it might help narrow it down. I can't tell by the pic, there will be either 3 or 4.
