I just bought this today and it was not labeled at the LFS.
I was contemplating between this, and Channa asiatica.
Truth is I was more interested in the asiatica as they seem much more aggressive. They were already flaring at each other at about 3". But the asiatica is sub tropical and I can't provide that.

So I settled for this, which I'm thinking is a Parachanna obscura. The shop owner doesn't know either.
Anyone can help to verify this?

It's currently about 3-4" in a 10 gallon. I've yet to set up the 3 X 1.5ft tank which have been empty for some time.

I snapped this picture immediately after acclimatization because it will be much harder if I waited for the colour to come back.

And I was right... Didn't take the fish a min to find its new home. And it has been there since.

That my friend is parachanna obscura, a stunning snakehead,truely stunning,wait til it grow's..grow it will very quick, mine went from 4inch to 11inch in a matter of months...Now however i have sold it due to possible moving abroad,it may seem a peaceful channa but do not under estimate it at all, it moves so life like and looks like a brach floating in the water then like lightning bam....

seriously grow quick and would need a bigger tank than a three footer..took mine around 3 weeks to get used to the tank and tank mates, then after that was always out and about,i miss it soo much..

some of the snakeheads just looks so alike!

is the 3ft tank insufficient? i thought it should suffice since the obscura maxes out at 14". i won't be having any tankmates with it... apart from some frogs and small fishes, which probably won't last long in the tank. :grinno:
if not, what size tank is good?

Is indeed an Obscura.
Tank size ? The bigger the better.
Though you say it will be a display fish, so I would say minimum 75gal.

You could probably get away with a little less, but wouldn't advise it.
 
I have one as well, got it at 3 inches. In fact, it just learnt to eat bloodworm. I keep it in a 2ft tank at present, when it is bigger it will go to my 4x2x2 ft tank with my bichir and odoe pike. i have a bit of worry about the odoe pike as it has worried a similr sized marulius to death. In the meantime, I have another 4ft tank with some cichlids, but they are even worse with tankmates.
