The first appears to be a female or sub-dominant male, the second is male. :)

haha see where my problem is?? all of the pictures are of the same fish! one day it looks like a female, other days it looks like a male! i got a trio of A. agassizi double reds. going to grow out the super reds in hopes that they breed. thanks for the id anyways. my fault that i forgot to say they where all the same fish!

also the fish is .75 to 1 inch :)

Looks it like has a case of gill-curl. I'd say it's a male.

any way to fix the gill curl? or its just a deformity? what makes you say its a male? would love to know how to sex em with a slight glance.

I love your avatar, did you take the picture yourself? what species is it? and what it TOTY?

Gill curl isn't so much a deformity as it is a sign of being raised in poor quality water, possibly water that's too hard. It can be fixed by trimming the gills, but in the fish that size it's not really possible. I keep Apistogramma but I'm not familiar with the agassizii super-complex, but I was under the impression that females of almost all variations and line-bred colourations were very similar in appearance - gold/yellow, thick black lateral line extending into the caudal fin. He's probably got another half-inch to go before he shows a spade tail.

Yes, thanks, it's the anal fin of a female Satanoperca leucosticta. TOTY is an acronym for Tank of the Year.

ahh im not to concerned with the gill curl, just wondered how it happened. congratz on getting the tank of the month, thanks for the help ill post pictures when it gets bigger. doing 5g water changes daily on a 20g tank. ph is about 6.6ish lots of plants and pots for them to hide & hopefully breed in.
