if i didnt know any better id say zorro catfish, but other than that some sort of pimelodus. how big is he? he sort of reminds me of my ornate pim cat

definately not a sturio or an ornate. Given its size already id say its pretty close to full grown. Unless that picture is way distorted. the fish is from the pimelodus genus. Other than that there are no distinctive markings to say which one.

The fish looks to me like an Indian Shovelnose species, likely sperata aor. I have kept them, one grew to 18" after a couple of years, had to sell it since it outgrew my 130g tank. They are a predator species so keep it with fish it's own size or larger and don't get another 'cause they won't get along with their own kind. Excellent find and nice to see something different...
Here's a pic of an adult one...

Smart it does look like a juvi one, don't mind if it gets up to the 2ft mark, if it gets over i'll pass it back to the shop. This is missing one eye and a bit of it's face on one side so imagine it came off worse in a fight in thepast.

Has it got a black spot at the base of its adipose fin?

Cant quite tell from the picture as its a little blurry & distorted but my 1st Impression would be that it's one of the Sperator species, either Aciclaris, Aor or Sengahla (apologies for the spelling) all of which get a dam site bigger than 2 feet I'm afraid.

Great fish mind, big, fast & aggressive.
