Anyone?

I don't know if its a mayan. There is no eyespot near the tail. Could be a hybrid

No, it has no eye spot. Just a black bar in the tail fin peduncle..

It looks exactly like a Mayan to me. Sometimes the white outer ring of the eye spot isn't cleary visible because of stress or mood. So this is my guess. One of the most underrated cichlids IMO. I've seen some very nice adults.

Mayans are amazing cichlids, but can be EXTREMELY unpredictable... i've raised one that killed anything in its tank, but then soon afterwards raised one that lives in a African cichlid community (he's 8+ inches, largest mbuna is 5, and a venustus that is 6) and completely ignores the little 1/4 inch (and bigger, all the way up to the venustus) fish that swim right up to him! only problem he had was when my 3 inch bumblebee (given away since he ripped out the eyes of one of my catfish) would sneek up behind him and nip his fins, knowing he was too fast for the mayan to catch... other side of the tank in a flash!
