Cant be a vulture cat, those dont hae markings on the fins... I'm gonna say its a jau. In which case... in time, youre gonna have a pretty damn big fish on your hands.

I think you are right. The Leiarius marmoratus picture looks a lot like this one. It is almost 2 feet long with whiskers about 3/4+ the length of the body. A little shy, but will still hand feed. The pet store sold it as an "Amazon Catfish". It's a pond-like setting so side pics are tricky, but I will attempt one during feeding.

I see. The stores in Western NY state label Jaus as "Amazon catfish". In any case, it is very cryptic and rather senseless. But Jaus don't have such long and prominent maxillary barbels. I am rather sure it is L. marmoratus.

I think it is a Perrunichthys perruno, and if it is...what a great fish. I've had one in the past about 24" long. Great personality and markings.

It is most assuredly one of my favorites too.

Perrunichthys perruno is a great guess but has one big con: they are only known from one place - Lake Maracaibo basin and I have read and been told there is no exporting from that area... has not been for many decades. As you can see, PCF has no pics of a live one: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=685. Now, that does happen at PCF for many recently added species but this one has been on the books for many years.

Other than that and unfortunately, many LFSs still label their normal and by far and very large prevalent Leiarius marmoratus and Learius longibarbis... Perrunichthys perruno because it comes from SA under the name of "perruno catfish".

Chances are trillion-to-one against you but count the rays, if you'd like: from the PCF data sheet I linked above: Identification -- Often confused with Leiarius marmoratus which is much more commonly encountered by aquarists. The fishes are identical in terms of colouration although P. perruno has 8 (1 hard and 7 soft) dorsal fin rays, Leiarius has 10 or 11.
