Its funny, the shot looks a little like an ornatum/gephyrum, but since there's really no way to tell, unless someone knows actual provenance, there's really no point in trying to guess. I just figure its a hybrid, and there fore of no use as a breeder, because "what can you truthfully say it is?" If you like it as a display fish, go for it.

Here's another shot of Mesoheros ornate.
And you know any hybrid can look like anything, it doesn't necessarily have to look like one or another parent, or both, it can look totally generic. This could be a cull of some sort, because it didn't look like the breeder wanted to look.

As many of you know, I am usually one of the first to point to hybrids when they are obvious.
But...there are over 3000 (as of 1998) different species of cichlids throughout the world, and over 600 species in the new world alone. Do any of us know , or have any of us seen them all? and can we readily I.D. them?
The possibility of a contaminant showing up at Petsmart or any other LFS is not out of the realm of possibility, even a rare or obscure one, and the store calling it some erroneous name , even more plausible.
Many large holding facilities will do a large sweep when catch fish, and estimate numbers. Fish jumping from tank to tank are also common.
I had a beanii jump from its tank across a walkway into a sump at least 10ft.
Beyond the possibility that a hybrid can look generic, there is also the above possibility and I.D.ing it from a photo fairly far fetched.
I see people asking for ID of Tilapia in the new world section, and get new world guesses, so we must take any ID with a large grain of salt.

True...however, Petsmarts have been carrying flowerhorns more and more, and I've even seen some with fish labelled as Red Texas, which is probably what this fish was labelled as by their supplier. Plus this fish has several characteristics of a FH from the pearling, the flowerline, black dorsal blotch. So yeah, occam's razor = this is some sort of FH/red texas. :)
