Hi everyone , I got these two large cichlids a few years ago and can't recall what exactly they are as they don't have a common name-only the scientific name.
They are approximately 6"Lx2.5"Hx1" thick and very peaceful. They are either Central or South American.

The spot on the upper half of the caudal suggests South American, in many Central American the spot spans the entire height of the caudal.
To me they look either from the genus Aequidens or Cichlasoma (perhaps C amazon arum). Both genera have very similar characteristics.
Below is Cichlasoma dimmerus.

You seem to be close to the mark, but there the name doesn't seem familiar from my memory. I looked up the ID you mentioned, and by the description there is no blue color or slight hump on the head.

I agree with duanes it is some sort of south American acara. There are a few species which look very similar, probably wont be possible to give you an ID with 100% certainty. It is also possible yours is not as colored up as the pictures duanes posted.
Amazonarum I think is as good a guess as you'll get.
