I recently traded 2 non-dominant male frontosa for two dozen 1" or less mixed Malawi. I was able to ID all but 2 of them. The mottled orange one and the pearl white with spots on the anal fin.

To make it more clear. I am just saying it most probably is not a Maylandia zebra but an estherae. The term OB zebra is quite misleading since it is often used for Maylandia estherae.
I always thought they were synonyms? Curious, what makes zebra different from esthere? Is esthere specific to the red zebra?

They are different species. M. estherae is valid since 1995 and was last confirmed in 2016.

I think it was declared a different species because it lives sympatric (or is it sympatrically?) with M. zebra. It means they share the same habitat without mixing.

Thanks for your help. There are at least 10 different kinds of fish in the mix he traded to me. There are roughly 24 fish altogether. I will post some pictures after I get rid of the last few tropicals I have left in there. Those 2 were the only ones I didn't find.
