I purchased this Geophagus a few months back, without knowing what it was, the LFS had it marked as a pike, apparently the wrong fish was sent by the supplier, So I took one. At first I figured it was just a normal jurupari, but lately I have noticed a change. Hes been showing signs of Yellow on his body and fins, as well as red on his head, which now from what I can see is becoming a hump. I read up on the Pellegirinis and people are saying they are unavailable in the US. Now, maybe, you guys can shed some light on what fish I really have. Ive got pics. But, due to my horrible gravel color picking skills I have white, so the fishes colors don't last long when the light is turned on.

Then on a side note, Is he obese? Like I mean is he fat.. is that possible for fish to become very fat.. because all this thing does is eat.

most likely a red hump, mine was sold as a Pellegrini but as much as i want it to be, it isnt. Mine looks exactly like this

Welcome to MFK!!! :welcome: great first post!

The fact the there are already visible signs of spangling on the flanks suggest G. steindachneri.

No sir just a plain old fish nerd haha! Well no matter which species you have, it is a harem breeder than needs a good male female ratio (1m/2f minimum) in order to spread aggression around. They can be a roudy species but having a good m/f ratio will help that. They are a great species and a blast to watch do there thing. Think of spring break, they want lots of heat, sand and women around... ;)

hmm, Water temp is high, I was thinking about getting sand, but women... I dont know about that one lol

steindachneri, as for pellegrini not avail thats not true a few vendors have them now, i have a breeding group for awhile males are around 7 inches females around 5.....
