Hi All,

Could someone ID my 'Blueface' Severum... I've had her for around 18 months now, and since she's been mating with my Rotkeil has developed some awesome colours (Photo's do not do it justice!), but I have never been able to work out what type of Sev she is... The best I can come up with is perhaps an Efasciatus / Rotkeil cross or Efasciatus / Notatus cross.... Does anyone know if there is a scientific name for this type, or are my assumptions reasonable enough?

Thanks

mmm, the name does seem to escape me quite a bit, i have never seen a noticeable green in them either but yet the name stands.
the only reason i say green is in australia, there are two varietys available, green and gold. and though all the greens i have seen look like this so i would definatly say this is a nice green

Are you sure that's the female? Females don't usually have marks on the face. I notice your rotkiel has a solid face, so I'd think it's the other way around with the rotkeil being the female and this fish being the male. If not... weird!

hey I've never seen a sev with such beautiful colors. Can it be a hybrid?

Interesting, as I have what I would class as a Green severum in the same tank... Here he is (Looking a little sorry for himself after being beaten up by the Rotkeil)... Strange how they could both be greens but are clearly very different.

Pretty Sure, as I've seen the Rottie fertilise the eggs... I had my doubts, because although the markings on the face of the Blueface are much more pronounced than the Rotkeil, the Rottie has a red 'shadow' on most of his face and his fins are much longer & pointy so I did wonder which of these tells would be more reliable... I accept that usually marking on the face are more pronounced in males, however my Red Spot Sev is a female (As it's previously bred with the clearly male Yellow/Gold Severum I have) and she is covered with markings / spots - Although I understand it's difficult to determine the sex of these as both males and female red spots have very similar appearances... Which is what lead me to believe that the Blueface was some sort of hybrid.

The fin length is not an accurate way of determining the sex in most cases. My turquoise, notatus, and Atabapo females all have very long, pointed fins like their mates. Rottie males usually have red and blue worming all over the cheeks and face.

As for the super reds, females do often have spotting like the males. I believe this has something to do with the line breeding.

Your spotted fish is probably a form of efascistus or appendiculatus. There is a wide variety of color variants. They range from blue to gray to green, and can be dark or light.

i dont know what it is but i just scooped up 25 nickel sized green sev's and if they turn out half that nice, i did good, nice looking fish , so if its a green or some hybrid , its nice for sure, and if you have them hybridizing with a rotkiel i would say there gonna be some sweet fry
good job
