Hello,

i recently purchased an ID shark for my tank its about 3 inches currently but he does alot of moving up and down on th far left glass of the tank has a rub spot on his nose. is this normal o might there be something causing this? all the other fish seem fine i tested the water the parameters do not seem out of wack. but would like to know if this is normal or if there is something you have to do with these fish to get them to swim around the tank some more.

Thanks

They often do this. If all stress factors (water, tank mates, oxygen, etc.) are thought through and eliminated as an explanation, I'd attribute it to the transparency of the glass (they never do it in ponds; same with arowanas) and maybe to a nervous nature of the fish.

You could place some furniture or plants at the sides or cover/paint the sides from the outside and see what happens.

The iridescent shark (catfish) is known for its very skittish nature and very poor eyesight. This makes Pangasis very hard to keep.especially if you only have 1 iridescent shark then he is probably scared These fish are schooling fish and get less skittish with numbers I would suggest five or more To make them less skittish. And also if your tank is in a high traffic area in the house or if your aquarium lights are constantly on this could be another thing leading up to him rubbing against the glass. It sounds as if your ID shark is very stressed. These beasts can and will grow to approximately anywhere from 3-4 1/2 feet. They have very large housing requirements. Another thing is that you shouldn't grow these fish out in anything less than a 30 gallon they love to swim that's in their nature if you've noticed that's the thing they are always doing. They need room to push air through their gills. If they don't have any horizontal swimming space they will go lateral which is what yours Is doing. Also Keep in mind that if your id shark is doing this swimming against the glass 24/7 then this is abnormal and you should either return it from the place you got it or get more so that it can feel safe in numbers if you choose this option YOU MUST have room to house all of them for five ID sharks you would be looking at a 1,000 gallon tank. If he only does it once in a while it should not be an issue I am no id shark expert by any means but I've told you what I know and I hope you can resolve your problem

it has to be tank mates i have some cichlids in there that might be messing with him some he doesn't do it 24/7 but he does it enough to notice it, the tank is an 8 foot tank so for his current size that should not be an issue, water is good and lights i turn off at 9 pm and turn on at 8 am everyday

Are there more IDSs in the tank? The tank light is not good for them. Ambient, indirect room light is plenty. If you catch cichlids bothering him - it's no good, this stress will make him ill and kill him; they are not hiders and will be attacked constantly because they swim around constantly.

3'-4' is more of the wild sizes. I have never seen one significantly over 2', perhaps only one ~2.5'-er out of ~15 adults I have had.

i moved him into a 55 gallon for now with some more peaceful fish give him some time to gain a few inches before i move him back into the big tank
