ok last time i posted this guy he was smaller and colors didnt really come in yet.now hes about 3-4" and i guess what would be his adult colors have come in. i bought this with three other fish which turned out to be flowerhorns labled the same.

Interesting coloration.. Could be texas/flowerhorn hybrid. But he does look very syn base. Meaning I see a lot of vieja traits in him.. Grow him out. You may have something really interesting there..
 
From what I have seen personally, white gravel washes out the body color with impacting red too much. I found that Red Dragons always looked nice over white gravel with a blue blackground. Black can deepen the red but it also darkens the body color which can be unappealing depending on the fish's body color.

Your tank may have a bare bottom but the stand underneath will also effect it.
