is this what they call a high back or diamond? Have seen other photos of "diamonds" but these fish have a more defined angle.

thanks

guessing it's the same as one in this photo

as opposed to one that looks like this

I would say that's a diamond but with a nice high back, just some genetic difference and the rhom looks a bit on a skinny side. each rhom looks a little different some has more of the high back profile but that's about it. especially when its skinny the edge is more visible compare to when it's fatten up. a very nice shaped rhom, except that evil chimple.
the ones in that video is the infamous Peru Rhom, but every rhom is different so not all peru rhom will have such high back profile.

correction: actually the ones in that video could be Venny rhom as well....not too sure.

Serrasalmus Rhombeus come in alot of shapes and sizes. With that comes alot of descriptive nicknames.
Vinny Rhoms like the few shown in the video are known for having a high back/steep, sharp slope going down almost hooking out to the snout. Not all Vinnies have this characteristic though.
A high back rhom can be found anywhere. It can be found in Venezuela, Peru or any other location rhoms inhabit. But the theory is more so in Venezuela.
Is that rhom in the first pic a high back? Could be. Angle is bad and like JP stated its fat storage is low. Looks to be newly imported.
For the longest time "diamonds" were rhoms thats body shape resembled a diamond. Also having sparkly scales more so then regular rhoms. If you haven't seen alot of young rhoms in person this is difficult to distinguish the two - diamonds vs blacks. Alot of people immediately jump on calling a rhom a diamond varient right after seeing sparkles. But there is a reason that Rhombeus' are called white piranhas when they're young.
Personally, I don't even consider making that call with fish under 6" or 7".

thanks for advice.

that's the thing, there's plenty of young ones around and hard to distinguish the final adult colors.

The ones in the video, "vinny" is it safe to say they come only in black? If so can narrow it down if i can find a fish at 5-6inch size, with out sparkles, which possesses that sharp angle with out being over skinny.

thats pretty hard to say what the rhom will turn out to be when adult, rhom goes through few changes as they grow so what they look like at 5in can be quite different compare to say 12". better off buying a large one with the shape and color you like. also if you use black substrate and cover or paint the back side of your tank black, the rhom will appear to be darker.

yeah like P said, your better off buying a big one rather than trying to grow a little guy. Even treated for parasites serras grow slow enough to separate the men from the boys. Takes a lot of patience to grow out a serra.

Everytime I see that video and that shoal of rhoms, I think about how much i'd like to go scuba diving in the amazon and then I think "No wait. What the hell are you thinking? Why would you want to do such an ignorant thing?" Can you imagine swimming up on the SHOAL of 10 lb rhoms? Even if you didn't know what those red eyes meant you'd know that these are big scary ass fish and there are things in there that eat rhoms...

haha...

yea, too bad there's not much of a market for piranhas here, not enough demand for LFS's to stock a large rhom and don't think suppliers are capable of getting something this specific, especially when it's just a var., rather than a clearly defined sp.

well will see what I can dig up. if they can get pictures prior to purchase will post here. I prefer to grow one out anyways, bet I'd get bored with a large fish relatively quickly anyways. Worse case it's not so bad ending up with a diamond.

thanks!
