A little place called C At Hell
Hello MFK,

Wetspot has just cleared these aequidens, but they are unidentified. Was wondering if anybody here has seen these guys before?

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing. Anthony sent me the picture but I have no idea what it is. He says they were collected in Peru. There aren't many true Aequidens from Peru. The only one, according to Cichlid Room Companion, is A. patricki, but it certainly doesn't have the markings of patricki.

Looks too young to tell yet ... the fact it's missing the dark facial markings would lean towards Ae. pallidus or Ae. tetramerus or something similar.

Aequidens rondoni perhaps?

Is it possible that it's actually a port type, from Cichlasoma?

It's possible, it just looks too young for me to pick out anything to give a clue really. Location would help narrow it down quite a bit.

I was thinking about these fish and decided to do some digging around. There is virtually no specific information about them except (fish base) they grow to about 4” SL and come from the upper Tapajos River basin in Brazil. The picture above is from Alf Stalsberg’s site which shows a picture and a name but no information what so ever. These fish may actually be a sub-species or transitional species between two others (this is pure speculation on my part). From what I’m able to ascertain, they are occasionally available in the hobby but I’m not sure they are targeted or just a by catch that comes in with other species, because in every instance their identity is questioned. Aquidens rondoni was first described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 but there is almost no other information available. Does The Wetspot have any information available pertaining to the origin of these fish? Otherwise the closest ID might be considered Aquidens sp. cf. rondoni but again this is just my opinion based on the original picture. HTH.

Thanks for digging, Tom. It helps a lot.

From what I've gathered from Wetspot they simply do not have an identification for this species.
