Yes, but unless it's really stressed out, it looks rather "hybridish" to me.

It's 100 % a male Auratus I bred Africans for year not sure If spelt right but look up on google you'll see it females are yellow with black stripe running down there body

i kinda thought it may have been an auratus too but i only seen pix of the females. now that i look at pictures of the males he looks like them except for he doesnt have the the darker blueish body with the lighter grey stripe i see in pix. his body is all brownish with a very light creme colored stripe higher up on his body. could his lighter color just be caused due to him being lower on the tank hierachy? he isnt bullied though, just isnt dominant

No that's definitely what it is I had a male that looked like him so don't have the show quality perfect color but that's what he is no doubt just going to let you know they can get super aggressive some times

tell me how these two fish look the same?
A male Auratus has a dark black lower body with a clear light line horizontally, your fish doesn't exhibit any of these characters.

It looks Melanochromis chipokae and they can have yellow in their fins, or I'ts a hybrid of some sort
heres a profile on Chipokae
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=755

If you look at some of the other Melanchromis profiles on that site you will see other simularities to yours.

so hard trying to get a good pic with him moving all the time coupled w the delay on my camera
