First of all please only reply if you REALLY know your stuff...dont just say "it has stripes its a vittatus." Well I said that at first but now Im thinking it could be forksahlli (spelling).

Ive had him a few months now and he hasnt gained weight or really grown at all. He downs several goldfish (intended for the payara) and 3-5 market shrimp a day!! With all this food Id think hed "bulk" up like a vitt would but he hasnt. Ive been doing research and it seems forksahlli tend to be skinnier. Also Ive read the forksahlli have eyes that seem to large for their head and this is true with mine as well even though it doesnt really show in the pics. Anyway what do you all think?

Oh he also (as you can see in the pics) has yellowish and greenish under tones to his body and fins. Generally the ones I see in pics have more silver with red on their fins.

:D
not an expert so im not going to respond on what it is
:D

I'm no expert, but I would say VATF, the FATF have different head and body shapes, as well as little/no pattern.

Ive only seen pictures of young FATF therefor little to no pattern was there so I just assumed it was juvi colors. Does any one have pics of adult FATF or ones around the size of mine (12")?

ETA: I was reading in an old, late 80's, ID book at work today and they said there were 6 species in the genus. Ive only heard of GATF, VATF, FATF, and BATF. <=== err being a gun-nut I hated typing that lol!!

There's a pic somewhere on here of a 12" or more FATF in a shop.

Edit: I've only seen younger VATF and FATF in person, but they look pretty different.

Ok so he seems to be a vitt. Now I have a new question; when do they start to put on that bulk? He eats like a pig but doesnt seem to be growing much.

Count the rows of scales below the lateral line since it's a little hard to make out in the pic. If it's 3 it's H. brevis and if it's 2 then it's H. vittatus.

Muillinaust, counting the row of scales on the belly there are three but Im not sure if I should count those. You can click the photos to blow them up so you can see better.
